The new store was officially opened at 785 Union Avenue, near Southwest Tennessee Community College and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Hundreds of people lined up, wrapping around the building, to get the ALDI experience, and dozens of store representatives, community leaders, and officials gathered at the front to mark the occasion with smiles and cheers.
“We’ve had such wonderful support from the local community, not only from the customer standpoint, but just from the economic development standpoint, and it’s been really, really exciting to see the excitement from so many customers lined up around the building,” said Karla Waddleton, regional VP for Aldi. “Some were even camped out overnight, getting here late last night to ensure they were first in line to be a part of this new store!”
The scene was vibrant, with shoppers enjoying the welcoming atmosphere, walkability of the new location, and the excitement of having something NEW in the Medical District. Community members had been asking for a grocery store in previous surveys and meetings.
“It's not really just an amenity, it’s really a necessity, of providing great quality food and essential products that a lot of our students, residents, and employees really need in this district,” said Rory Thomas, president of MMDC.
The first 100 customers received a Golden Ticket, worth up to $100, and ALDI offered special promotions. Along with neighbors receiving a coupon and postcard via mail, customers who visited April 10-13 could scan for a chance to win more free groceries (an extra special perk, given the rising prices of eggs and other grocery items)! Cynthia Richmond, who lives in Downtown Memphis, says her nephew told her this new location was coming. She was no. 98 in line and received a golden ticket.
“The prices are just phenomenal, you can’t beat the prices. So I’ve been shopping for years and I know, and I shop in a lot of places, so I enjoy it. And it is right downtown where I live, so I’m happy,” said Richmond. “The drive from here lasts 3 minutes, versus me going to Collierville and Summer, so I am glad to have that right in my neighborhood.”
According to their website, ALDI is one of America’s fastest growing retailers and is known for their selection of fresh produce and store-exclusive brands. This new location joins 13 other ALDI stores in Memphis and Shelby County.
