Can you tell me about yourself and the history of your business?

My name is Montrell, but everybody calls me Trell. I’m from North Memphis, born and raised. I’ve been cutting for about 13 years. I started down the street at C. Tatum’s 13 years ago. It took me 13 years to get to this level. Upscale Kutz opened up in the Medical District in June of 2018.

What attracted you to the Medical District?

The area. This is a great area for business due to the traffic and due to being at an intersection, a lot of people come back and forth. It was a great opportunity to open a barbershop. I get a lot of clients in this space.

Have you ever received any business support from the Memphis Medical District Collaborative?

Yes, we received an Event Grant for our grand opening event last month. It was a success! We had a ribbon cutting.  State representative London Lamar and former Mayor of Nashville, Karl Dean were both present.

Do you have any special or signature services?

Not at the moment, but I will be having facial services coming soon!

Is there a most popular haircut or service that you offer right now?

The taper and the designs are most popular. I think the people here- they focus more on the environment. Being comfortable in this particular environment is like a refreshing space. People are able to be who they are, and not be judged in this space. You are allowed to be you and talk about whatever you want to talk about without being judged. That atmosphere allows people to not just get a haircut, but to do a little venting, have a little fun, and just talk about life.

Do you have any upcoming specials, promotions, or events?

We will be having a Customer Appreciation event in 2019 with discounts and specials. It will be a celebration! We will also be doing a free Back-to-School haircut drive for Memphis Academy of Health Sciences in August 2019.

Is there anything else that you’d like the Memphis community to know about Upscale Kutz?

I’ve been here since June and being part of the Medical District made me feel like I made a great decision on where I started my business at. I feel like most of the time, when people start their own business, they have a really hard time getting to where they’re going, but I feel like I’ve accomplished a whole lot just being in this area. It made my time as a business owner easy. You have the Medical District Collaborative and the support of the other businesses around you. I’m looking forward to the rest of my time here! I’m all about growing, and that’s a big part of what Upscale is all about.
